It can be a challenge to keep up your exercise routine in the winter, especially if you swim in an outdoor pool. It’s cold and dark outside, and your couch has never looked more comfortable.
Well, stop listening to that voice in your head that “doesn’t want to.” Here are some tips and tricks to help you stay motivated even when the temperature drops.
Set yourself up for success
If you’re an early-morning swimmer, lay out your suit and clothes next to your bed the night before. When the alarm goes off, no thinking is needed. Just pull on everything and head out the door.
Hold off the cold
If the pool is outdoors, make sure to get completely ready inside. Put on your swim cap, earplugs, and googles (maybe not over your eyes) before you step out into the chilly weather. Keep your flip flops on until you get to the side of the pool so the bottoms of your feet don’t freeze (figuratively, of course).
Remind yourself of the benefits
There’s no denying you always feel better after you swim. It’s one of the best things about the sport! Make it your mantra and it will get you to the pool every time.
Find the beauty
You get to witness some pretty amazing sunrises if you’re in the pool early. Sometimes, a magical moment of nature makes it all worth it.
Learn from doing
Maybe you slept badly or ate a weird dinner. You woke up feeling not great and you’re afraid your swim will be terrible. Well, get over it. That’s the exact time to trust your training. You might surprise yourself and swim better than you expect. More importantly, swimming through different “feels” teaches you about you and how you can persevere in imperfect situations.
Join a group
Don’t be intimated to sign up with a masters swim program. All swimmers, 18-years-old and up, are welcome. Coaches create a daily workout and they will help you with your technique. It’s fun, social, and effective.
Bring treats
Stick a snack or something yummy in your bag to enjoy after your workout. It will give you something to look forward to!
