It can be a challenge to maintain an active lifestyle in December. Whether you’re traveling or hosting, healthy habits can quickly get derailed by schedule changes and excessive desserts. Here are some tips to keep your exercise routine going strong all the way through the new year.
Visualization
Take a moment to imagine yourself not exercising. How does that make you feel? If you’re getting notes of sadness or regret, let that motivate you to make it happen.
Remember Your Why
There’s a reason why you swim, whether it’s for health, stress management, working toward a fitness goal, or plain old joy. Remember the reason and let it take you all the way to the pool.
Do What You Can
The holidays are busy. If you aren’t able to do your usual routine, it’s ok! If you only have twenty minutes, swim for twenty minutes. Doing some form of exercise is better than nothing at all.
Switch Up Your Routine
Do something different and you might find it easier to motivate that day. Instead of a swim, take a long walk.
Focus on Fun
If getting in the pool feels like a drag, plan a coffee date with friends after your workout. Try out some new equipment the pool might have available. Reward yourself with a new snack after your swim.
Mix Up Your Workout
If your usual swim routine has become a bore, try something different with these three exercises.
1. Time: Swim for twenty minutes, then fifteen, then ten and then 5 minutes. Count your laps if you like or just zone out!
2. Breath: Take a breath every 3 strokes for 100 yards. Then, for the next 100 yards, take a breath every 5 strokes. Then every 7 strokes, and every 9 strokes. Kick less than usual because kicking uses lots of oxygen. Breathwork helps to connect mind to body.
3. Speed: Sprint 1-2 laps at a time with 30-45 seconds rest. Swimming fast is a great way to release any pent-up energy from the holidays or out-of-town guests. Put on fins and enjoy the extra boost.
